Mr. McCarthy, who teaches at East Brunswick High School, created a series of images inspired by concepts from Buddhism and Catholicism about physical existence, rebirth and resurrection. Matthew states, "This journey has given me deepened insights into my own artistic vision and opened up ways to help my students identify and express their own meanings through art making."

Mrs. Meghan Giacobello (EBHS Art Department) works every summer with children who have cancer and blood disorder and their families at Robert Wood Johnson through the Embrace Kids Foundation. This year she also worked alongside an East Brunswick Alumnus, Mike Nicolaro.
Before the end of the school year, several of the EBHS jewelry classes made bracelets for the patients which were delivered to the patients over the summer. Mrs. Giacobello reported that the kids loved them, and she knows the students enjoyed making them!

October 2014

Congratulations on a summer of community service and professional development

Students of Ms. Donna D'Amico (EBHS Art) pose behind a special piano painting project requested by the East Brunswick Arts Commission. Read the article on this unique way to connect the members of the community to the arts.

Jennifer Sengin (EBHS Music) was the artistic director of Ithaca College Summer Music Academy Video embedded below. Students in the program made a documentary about the importance of music and how you can use music to be expressive. The song is "Brave" by Sara Barielle, and students talk about how music can make you "brave" or "courageous."

Congratulations to Lynne Elson (CJHS Theatre Arts) on being named the 2014 winning playwright with her play "A Blessed Unrest."  In keeping with the Firehouse Theatre’s (Richmond, VA) mission of promoting new work by American artists, the Festival of New American Plays began in 2002 as a way to encourage and incubate new plays by established and emerging playwrights in the USA. It has become a grassroots event with substantial involvement from the community, as hundreds of scripts submitted to the Playwriting Contest from all over the country are read by volunteer readers from the Greater-Richmond area.

Students of Antonia Germanos (HMS Art) participated in "The Memory Project" for Nicaraguan children. HMS Art students drew portraits based on photographs and helped raise $3,000 for their schooling needs.
Watch the video of the children receiving them below:

Dear Ms. Germanos and all artists,

I’m happy to let you know that over the summer your portraits were delivered to the kids at the orphanages in Nicaragua!  We made the following video to show everyone how the delivery took place, and to give you a glimpse at their reactions:

Dr. Anna Braun (CJHS Music) was interviewed by the Newark Star Ledger on the importance of Arts Education in schools. Read the article from Inside NJ  Magazine here, which was based on a visit to the Churchill Pops Concert last June.

Held at the East Brunswick Performing Arts Center at Hammarskjold Middle School, this concert is a culmination of the experience each child has received through a series of four lessons in the elements and principles of dance taking place within general music classes throughout October and November.
